EVwire brief: The Tesla Model Y was China's best-selling vehicle of any fuel type in September 2026, with the all-electric crossover logging 50,359 retail sales, as per China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) data.
The Model Y finished well ahead of the Geely Xingyuan (44,275) and the BYD Yuan UP (22,767), while the Model 3 also made the top 10 with 14,478 units. Interestingly, the Model Y is also the highest priced vehicle in China’s top ten best-selling passenger vehicle list for September.
Here are the September rankings, as posted by Dongchedi (H/T to @TomoraiKira and @ray4tesla on X):

The Model Y and Model 3 account for all 64,837 of Tesla China's domestic retail sales in September, placing Tesla fourth among China's NEV makers behind BYD, Geely and Leapmotor.
On the wholesale side, Tesla China delivered 95,366 vehicles in September, including 30,529 exports. The Model Y accounted for 62,948 of those wholesale units, with the Model 3 adding another 32,418.
The Model Y's September result came during a tough month for China's car market. Passenger vehicle retail sales fell 28.0% year over year to 1.618 million units, though NEVs made up a record 67.0% of retail sales.

Context:
It's also not the Model Y's first time at the top this year. EVwire previously reported the crossover as China's best-selling vehicle of any fuel type in March and again in June, when it logged 38,654 retail registrations. All three wins landed in the last month of a quarter, which is when Tesla traditionally pushes hardest on deliveries.
Giga Shanghai, meanwhile, just closed out its best quarter on record. Tesla China wholesaled 275,111 vehicles in Q3, up 13.73% year over year and 8.08% from a Q2 that ended with 89,091 units in June. September's 95,366 units were the factory's best month of 2026 and its highest since December 2025.
