Tesla Cybercab is the first Tesla with brake-by-wire: no brake fluid, individual actuators at each corner

EVwire brief: The Tesla Cybercab is the first Tesla vehicle to use a fully brake-by-wire system, eliminating brake fluid entirely. The system uses individual actuators at each corner with no central master cylinder.

The Cybercab also uses steer-by-wire, with its steering rack mounted behind the drive unit. Tesla first developed its steer-by-wire system for the Cybertruck, and the technology is now carrying over to the robotaxi as part of a broader push toward simplified, software-controlled vehicle dynamics.

Tesla watcher Sawyer Merritt highlighted the brake-by-wire system after getting a close look at the Cybercab's exposed suspension and braking hardware at the launch event:

Kyle Conner of Out of Spec also flagged the brake-by-wire setup as a standout detail in his engineering rundown of the Cybercab. He noted the individual actuators at each corner and the absence of brake fluid or a central master cylinder:

A brake-by-wire system replaces the traditional hydraulic braking system with electronically controlled actuators. Each wheel gets its own independent unit, meaning the system can apply different braking force to each corner of the vehicle without the lag or complexity of hydraulic lines. For an autonomous vehicle with no human driver, this is a natural fit, as the software can modulate braking at each wheel with precision that a hydraulic system cannot match.

The steer-by-wire system follows the same philosophy. Instead of a mechanical connection between a steering column and the front wheels, an electronic system translates software commands into steering inputs. Tesla first deployed steer-by-wire in the Cybertruck, where it enables features like variable steering ratios and rear-wheel steering. In the Cybercab, which has no steering wheel at all, steer-by-wire is a necessity.

Tesla previously shared a graphic showing technologies developed for the Cybertruck that would carry over to future vehicles. Steer-by-wire was on that list, alongside the 48-volt electrical architecture, giga-castings, and integrated audio with body structure. The Cybercab is now the clearest example of that technology transfer in action.

The Cybertruck may not be produced in very large quantities, but the technologies it pioneered, like steer-by-wire, will be implemented in the Cybercab, the company’s highest volume vehicle.

Context:

The move to brake-by-wire and steer-by-wire is part of a broader engineering theme with the Cybercab: eliminate as many mechanical systems as possible. With no steering wheel, no brake pedal, and no accelerator pedal, the vehicle's entire dynamic control is handled through software and electronics.

This approach pairs with the Cybercab's other simplifications. The vehicle uses injection-molded body panels instead of stamped metal, a 48-volt low-voltage architecture, and an autopilot computer similar to Hardware 4 with iterative updates. Its drag coefficient is below 0.2 Cd, making it one of the most aerodynamically efficient production vehicles ever built.
