EVwire brief: Tesla's Cybercab will be available for public rides starting today, 4th of September, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. Central Time.
The announcement comes as Tesla's Unsupervised Robotaxi fleet crossed a major milestone: 1 million cumulative miles driven without a human behind the wheel. The Cybercab rides will be available across the entire Austin, Texas geofence.

Even before the 1 million-mile milestone was announced on X, Tesla engineers who participated in the Cybercab launch event shared the news with attendees. The news was received with much applause.
“As a testament to safety, I am happy to announce that we’ve achieved 1 million miles of Unsupervised Robotaxi operations as of this moment.”

Context:
Tesla's Robotaxi service initially launched with Model Y vehicles in Austin, and later expanded to Tampa, Miami, Dallas, and Houston. A Tesla ride-hailing service has also been released in the Bay Area, but the vehicles there still require safety monitors. Austin’s Cybercab rollout marks the first time when Elon Musk’s original Robotaxi vision, using a vehicle designed only for autonomy, will become a reality.
The Cybercab is a fully autonomous vehicle with no steering wheel, designed specifically for ride-hailing. It features butterfly doors, a large interactive touchscreen, climate controls, and a trunk that fits two check-in suitcases and two carry-on bags. Riders can manage trips through the Tesla app or the in-vehicle screen.
Elon Musk has previously said that Tesla plans to manufacture "several times more Cybercabs per year than all of our other vehicles combined," and that the robotaxi network will eventually be predominantly Cybercab-based since most rideshare trips involve just one or two passengers.
