EVwire brief: Tesla has published an official Cybercab Rider Guide on its website, complete with a two-minute tutorial video walking passengers through the full ride experience. The guide covers every step from opening the Robotaxi app to exiting at your destination, and lands just as the Cybercab prepares for its Austin launch on September 3, 2026.

The guide breaks the Cybercab experience into five stages: requesting a ride, pick-up, starting your ride, during the trip, and drop-off. Here is what passengers need to know.
Requesting a ride
Riders open the Robotaxi app, enter a destination within the service area, and review the fare estimate and wait time. Once confirmed, the app sends a notification when the Cybercab is approaching.

Pick-up
The Cybercab's rear lightbar glows red while it is on its way. The front lightbar changes to a specific colour that matches the one shown in your app, so you can spot your vehicle in a busy area. Tesla notes that riders should confirm the licence plate matches the one listed in the Robotaxi app before boarding.
The doors open automatically when the vehicle detects the rider's phone nearby. If they do not, a button on the door handle opens them manually. Hazard lights flash while the Cybercab is parked at the pick-up point. The trunk is accessible for luggage before you get in.
Starting your ride
Passengers can sit in either seat. Once seated and buckled in, the door closes automatically. To begin the trip, touch "Start Ride" on the centre touchscreen. The ride will not start until all seat belts are fastened and all doors are closed.
During the ride
Passengers must stay seated with their seat belt fastened for the entire trip. The touchscreen displays a real-time trip map, estimated time of arrival, and controls for climate and entertainment. Riders can change their destination through the Robotaxi app mid-trip, or request a pull-over at any time. They can also charge their devices through a port under the Cybercab’s display.

Drop-off
When the Cybercab arrives, it parks and flashes its hazard lights. Passengers open the door using the touchscreen or the interior door lever. Tesla reminds riders to collect any belongings from the trunk before completing the trip in the app.
Context:
The Cybercab is launching in Austin, Texas on September 3, 2026, augmenting the Model Y Robotaxi fleet already operating in the city. Tesla has also opened a fleet purchasing interest form, signalling that the company is preparing for commercial fleet operators to buy Cybercabs directly.
