Tesla's Cybercab heads to Dallas next month, first customer deliveries targeted by the end of 2026

EVwire brief: Tesla is planning to launch Cybercab rides in Dallas next month, with the company also aiming to run its Robotaxi service around the clock by the end of 2026.

Tesla executives laid out the timeline during the company's Q3 2026 earnings call. Ashok Elluswamy, Tesla's VP for AI Software, said the Cybercab only launched in Austin first because Tesla wanted to flood the city with the vehicles, and that the same software will scale to other cities alongside its Model Y Robotaxis.

❝

“There's no fundamental reason that we are limited to Austin. In fact, next month we'll be launching in Dallas, and then the same software just scales to lots of other cities along with the Model Y Robotaxis.”

—Ashok Elluswamy, VP for AI Software at Tesla

VP for Vehicle Engineering Lars Moravy confirmed that the Cybercab will be the first Tesla vehicle that customers could but that is fully designed for autonomy.

❝

“We're trying to get Cybercabs to customers by the end of this year, 2026. Obviously, we're producing them on our line in Texas, but all of those are currently going to our own internal Robotaxi fleet. And as Tesla grows, we'll mainly deliver fully designed autonomous vehicles to our customers, and Cybercab will be the first.”

The Austin rollout has been moving quickly. CEO Elon Musk said the Cybercab fleet in the city has grown tenfold since launching about a month ago, while Taneja noted that Tesla's cumulative unsupervised miles grew 8x in Q3, with double-digit weekly growth throughout the quarter.

On the business side, Taneja said exponential growth in miles should make Robotaxi a significant part of Tesla's revenue and profitability in 2027. Musk, for one, stated that the Robotaxi Network’s contribution to Tesla’s numbers should be noticeable starting the second quarter of 2027.

Customer-owned Teslas could still join the network soon, too. Elluswamy said the first customer vehicles could be added to the Robotaxi fleet around Q2 2027, once the same software lands in owners' cars through the V15 release.

❝

“The software for Cybercab and Model Y is the same, and pretty soon we'll be able to release the same software as part of the V15 release to customers. The only additional requirement is making sure that, for example, the customer Model Ys can be part of the geofences and the fleet management that Tesla has for it to be fully autonomous. We suspect somewhere around Q2 next year is when we can turn on some of the first customer vehicles to be part of the Robotaxi fleet.”

—Ashok Elluswamy, VP for AI Software at Tesla

Context:

The Dallas timeline lines up with what Tesla has been signaling in recent weeks. Earlier this month, Elluswamy noted that Cybercabs were soon heading to Dallas, and the Austin fleet has grown to 349 units. Tesla has also been expanding its Model Y Robotaxi footprint, having launched unsupervised service in Dallas and Houston back in April.

Regulators are keeping a close eye on the Cybercab's rollout, however. NHTSA has given Tesla until October 30 to answer its Cybercab FMVSS special order, while outside Texas, Tesla has secured Nevada approval for up to 5,000 Robotaxis.
