EVWire brief: China recorded about 696,000 domestic battery-electric vehicle (BEV) sales in May 2025, a 43.1% year-on-year increase. The number comes from China Association of Automobile Manufacturers’ (CAAM) wholesale figures, which list 834,000 total BEV sales and 138,000 BEV exports.

The New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) made up 48.7% of the overall China auto market in May, and per our calculations, it seemed BEVs made up 31% of all vehicles wholesaled in China in May.

Note: this is the CAAM data, which is reporting factory shipments (wholesale), and we’ll get the CPCA’s insured-registration data which shows the actual EVs bought by customers within a week. We’ll update at EVWire once released.

In May, the new Tesla Model Y has reportedly again taken the top place in all models sold, with 24,770 units registered (counted per insurance registrations), with BYD Song Plus in the second place with 24,240 units.

In 2025 (January – May), Tesla sold 126,643 Model Ys in China, while BYD Song Plus sold 110,551. BYD Song Pro took third place with 80,245 units.
