EVwire brief: Ford CEO Jim Farley confirmed the company is developing an affordable all-electric vehicle to compete directly with the Tesla Model Y and Tesla Model 3.
Speaking on Spike’s Car Radio, Farley said that Ford will continue expanding EVs alongside hybrids, stating the company plans to offer a Model Y and Model 3 rival as part of its future lineup.
“We’ll have an all-electric, affordable vehicle to compete with Model Y and Model 3.”
Context:
Farley’s comments outline a dual-track strategy. Ford is pushing toward a lineup where every vehicle includes hybrid options, while still investing in fully electric vehicles across multiple segments.
Farley’s comments come as the Tesla Model Y and Model 3 continue to lead their respective segments globally, with Ford EVs like the Mustang Mach-E typically trailing far behind.
In the first quarter of 2026, the Model Y sold 78,591 units and the Model 3 sold 31,672 units. The best-selling Ford EV, the Mustang Mach-E, sold 4,600 units (-60.4% YoY).
Farley also referenced broader product plans, including a potential return of a “rear wheel drive performance, high performance affordable sedan” that’s built on the company’s Universal EV Platform.
Farley outlined Ford’s EV plans in the latter minutes of his interview with Spike’s Car Radio (starts at around 1:00:10 mark):
Ford’s Universal EV Platform plans
Ford’s upcoming EVs are expected to be built on its Universal EV Platform (UEV), which is designed to support multiple vehicle types:
Compact and mid-size crossovers
Two- and three-row SUVs
Sedans (including subcompact and larger sedans)
Pickup trucks and vans
A mid-size electric pickup based on this platform is expected to debut in 2027 for the 2028 model year.
