EVWire brief: The Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Limited (TNGECL) will set up 500 EV charging stations (not specified but likely CCS2 fast charging) across the Tamil Nadu state in India, with the first 20 being set up along the Chennai-Coimbatore and Chennai-Kanniyakumari highways.
TNGECL signed an MoU with the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP) India for technical support to power the state’s EV ambitions.
As the knowledge partner, ITDP India will extend technical support in planning EV charging networks; aggregating land for charging infrastructure; crafting supportive policies and initiatives, and digital platforms for communications and outreach.
“According to the Ministry of Power’s guidelines, charging stations should be available every 25 km along highways. So in the first phase, we plan to set up 20 charging stations along the Chennai-Coimbatore and Chennai-Kanniyakumari highways. As part of this, TNGECL is planning to create full-fledged EV hubs with public-friendly facilities. We plan to include waiting halls, restaurants, drinking water, toilet facilities, and large parking spaces at these charging stations.”
Context: Tamil Nadu currently has 847 public CCS2 charging points deployed (and another 218 Type 2 plugs), with the latest data from our friends at EVInfra.BI. They also write in their latest article:
“Among the top five states, Tamil Nadu has the most number of chargers located near highways, with approximately 90% are within 1 km of a highway. This is an excellent metric to show that the chargers are spread across the state, enabling for e-mobility between cities. The network allows e-mobility to happen between Bengaluru to Chennai, Bengaluru to Coimbatore, Chennai to Kanyakumari (southern most tip of the mainland country) via smaller towns very easily.”
ExpWithEVs dashboard here shows the situation of the highway distances from chargers of the top states best, with Tamil Nadu state shown on the right:

The state is ranked 4th in electric passenger vehicle sales in India, with 8,533 sold in 2024, up 24% and makes up 8% of all EVs sold in India.
