Tesla Australia hits record 8,670 sales in June, Model Y clears 8,000 for the first time

EVwire brief: Tesla set an all-time sales record in Australia in June, delivering 8,670 vehicles, according to Electric Vehicle Council (EVC) data. The result nearly doubles its June 2025 total of 4,589 and blows past the previous record of 6,433, set just a month earlier in May.

The Tesla Model Y did the heavy lifting with 8,072 units, the first time it has cleared 8,000 in a single month in Australia and a jump of 133.5% year-over-year. The crossover topped its month-old record of 5,605, and the number all but locks in a second straight month as Australia's best-selling vehicle of any type.

Here's an update on the milestone from X:

Tesla's first half in Australia now stands at 23,588 deliveries, up 66.7% from 14,146 in the same period last year. The Model Y accounts for 20,396 of those, helped along by the arrival of the six-seat Model Y L. The Model 3 has traveled the other way, slipping 14% to 3,192 for the half, with its 598 June deliveries roughly half of last year's total for the month.

The pace marks a sharp turnaround from a year ago, when Australian demand was dented by the wait for the updated Model Y and some consumer pushback against CEO Elon Musk's political involvement in the US. As per automotive analyst Mike Costello, Tesla’s rebound in Australia is notable, and it has allowed the Model Y to reach heights that haven’t been reached since the days of the VY Holden Commodore in the late 90s.

Context:

The broader market is pulling in the same direction. EV sales rose in every Australian state and territory in the EVC's data, with every market except Tasmania and Western Australia gaining more than 64%, as buyers respond to the fuel-price surge that followed the outbreak of the war on Iran in late February.

In May, battery-electric vehicles took 20.6% of Australia's new-car market and the Model Y became the first EV ever to top the national monthly sales charts; June's share is expected to land higher still when the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries publishes its VFACTS report, likely on Friday.

The Model Y's Australian run mirrors its standing globally, where it remains the world's best-selling EV by a wide margin.

Busier per stall, yet fewer drivers waiting.
