EVwire brief: Tesla reported 79,478 China-made vehicle sales in April, representing a 36% year-over-year increase, as per data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).
The figure includes both domestic deliveries and exports of the Tesla Model 3 and Tesla Model Y produced at Gigafactory Shanghai.
Sales declined 7.2% month-over-month, though the result marked Tesla’s sixth consecutive month of year-over-year growth. Tesla’s January–April wholesale volume also reached 292,876 vehicles, up 26.7% year-over-year.

Tesla’s China-made vehicle sales have continued to recover in 2026 following a weaker period last year, with year-to-date volumes now up 26.7% compared to 2025.
Tesla’s April performance came after a strong March, when wholesale deliveries reached 85,670 units as the Chinese auto market rebounded from seasonal weakness. That momentum helped lift first-quarter wholesale deliveries to 213,398 units, up 23.53% year-over-year.
Gigafactory Shanghai remains a central export hub for Tesla, supplying vehicles to Europe and other international markets alongside domestic Chinese deliveries.

China continues to be one of Tesla’s most important markets. While the Model Y is already one of the country’s best-selling vehicles and the Model 3 continues to perform well in its segment, the company is still looking to establish a stronger presence in China.

However, key demand levers such as FSD Supervised remain partially released. Tesla is reportedly looking to secure FSD approval in China sometime in the third quarter. Tesla is reportedly developing a lower-cost compact SUV for the Chinese market as well.

April results from major Chinese EV makers reflected mixed performance across the sector.
BYD reported 321,123 NEV sales, up 6.96% month-over-month but down 15.51% year-over-year, extending its streak of annual declines. Geely delivered 235,164 vehicles, with flat year-over-year growth supported by exports despite a sharp domestic decline.
Nio reported 29,356 deliveries, up 22.83% year-over-year but down 17.27% from March.
Xpeng delivered 31,011 vehicles, marking a fourth consecutive year-over-year decline, though monthly volumes improved, and Li Auto reported 34,085 deliveries, with flat annual growth and a double-digit sequential decline.
