Tesla China sales rise 36% year-over-year, YTD figures up 26.7%

EVwire brief: Tesla reported 79,478 China-made vehicle sales in April, representing a 36% year-over-year increase, as per data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).

The figure includes both domestic deliveries and exports of the Tesla Model 3 and Tesla Model Y produced at Gigafactory Shanghai.

Sales declined 7.2% month-over-month, though the result marked Tesla’s sixth consecutive month of year-over-year growth. Tesla’s January–April wholesale volume also reached 292,876 vehicles, up 26.7% year-over-year.

Industry watcher Roland Pircher highlighted Tesla China’s results in a post on X:

Context:

Tesla’s China-made vehicle sales have continued to recover in 2026 following a weaker period last year, with year-to-date volumes now up 26.7% compared to 2025.

Tesla’s April performance came after a strong March, when wholesale deliveries reached 85,670 units as the Chinese auto market rebounded from seasonal weakness. That momentum helped lift first-quarter wholesale deliveries to 213,398 units, up 23.53% year-over-year.

Gigafactory Shanghai remains a central export hub for Tesla, supplying vehicles to Europe and other international markets alongside domestic Chinese deliveries.

Giga Shanghai is currently the only factory that produces the Model Y L

China continues to be one of Tesla’s most important markets. While the Model Y is already one of the country’s best-selling vehicles and the Model 3 continues to perform well in its segment, the company is still looking to establish a stronger presence in China.

We covered the Model Y’s performance in China’s domestic market in March in this article:

However, key demand levers such as FSD Supervised remain partially released. Tesla is reportedly looking to secure FSD approval in China sometime in the third quarter. Tesla is reportedly developing a lower-cost compact SUV for the Chinese market as well.

We covered that story in this report:

China EV market shows mixed momentum across automakers

April results from major Chinese EV makers reflected mixed performance across the sector.

BYD reported 321,123 NEV sales, up 6.96% month-over-month but down 15.51% year-over-year, extending its streak of annual declines. Geely delivered 235,164 vehicles, with flat year-over-year growth supported by exports despite a sharp domestic decline.

Nio reported 29,356 deliveries, up 22.83% year-over-year but down 17.27% from March.

Xpeng delivered 31,011 vehicles, marking a fourth consecutive year-over-year decline, though monthly volumes improved, and Li Auto reported 34,085 deliveries, with flat annual growth and a double-digit sequential decline.
