EVwire brief: Volkswagen has revealed a new cockpit and interior that will define future ID. electric models, debuting with the near-production ID. Polo concept vehicle. The redesign emphasizes customer feedback, intuitive operation, physical buttons, enhanced software features, and a retro digital display inspired by the original Golf.
Volkswagen has unveiled a completely redesigned cockpit and interior architecture that will bring shape to the future of its electric vehicle lineup, making its debut in the all-new ID. Polo. The new design is the result of a consistently customer-focused development process, aimed at improving usability, clarity, and quality across Volkswagenโs ID. models.

The new cockpit introduces a clear and structured layout with a strong horizontal orientation. Two large displays dominate the interior: a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster positioned behind the steering wheel and a nearly 13-inch central infotainment touchscreen, which stands out in the compact segment for its size and resolution. Graphics are high-resolution and designed for easy readability, with menu structures intentionally simplified.

Volkswagen has also responded directly to customer feedback by reintroducing physical controls for key functions. Dedicated buttons for climate control and hazard lights are positioned below the infotainment screen, while a newly developed multi-function steering wheel features clearly defined button fields. A rotary controller located between the smartphone tray and cup holders allows intuitive audio control for both driver and passenger.
โThe all-new ID. Polo is an affordable friend for everyday life. Just as the Polo always was, but now electric. We have created an interior that feels like a friend from the very first contact. Clear physical buttons provide stability and trust, warm materials make it appealing, and charming details such as the new retro views of the instruments show the typical Volkswagen wink. All this makes the ID. Polo a compact car with a big heart โ โPure Positiveโ in its purest form.โ
Beyond hardware changes, the ID. Polo debuts Volkswagenโs next-generation software platform. New features include one-pedal driving, advanced parking assistance systems, and an optional third-generation Travel Assist. This latest iteration of Travel Assist is designed to recognize red traffic lights and stop signs, further enhancing comfort and assistance in everyday driving scenarios.
A distinctive element of the new cockpit is its retro digital display. With the press of a button on the steering wheel or infotainment system, the digital instrument cluster can switch to classic visual themes inspired by the original 1980s Golf. Volkswagen designers describe this feature as part of the brandโs internal โSecret Sauce,โ intended to create an emotional connection through unexpected and playful details.
The interior design follows Volkswagenโs new โPure Positiveโ design language, combining warm materials, fabric-covered dashboard and door surfaces, and a focus on tactile quality. According to Volkswagen, the goal is to deliver compact electric vehicles that feel inviting and familiar while offering comfort and quality typically associated with higher vehicle classes.
