EVWire brief: Nio signed a string of distributor agreements that will see its main-brand models and the upcoming budget Firefly EV sold in ten additional European markets. The latest deal with Greek mobility group Motodynamics covers Greece, Cyprus and Bulgaria. On June 3rd, NIO announced it will enter Austria, Belgium, Czechia, Hungary, Luxembourg, Poland, and Romania within 2025/2026.

Context: The ten-market expansion lifts Nio’s European footprint to 15 countries when added to its existing sales bases in Norway, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden and Denmark.

Launches will roll out during 2025 and 2026, and will do so under local dealer groups instead of NIO-owned “Nio House” stores, like its current approach in Spain and Italy.

  • In Greece, Cyprus and Bulgaria, the distributor for both Nio and Firefly brands will be a Greek company Motodynamics;

  • In Belgium and Luxembourg, Nio will collaborate with Hedin Mobility Group.

  • In Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), Nio will partner with AutoWallis, entering Austria and Hungary in 2025 and Czechia, Poland and Romania in 2026.

Per NIO, the offering in these markets will be:

  • NIO, focused on premium smart electric vehicles, including:

    • NIO EL6, a smart electric all-round SUV

    • NIO EL8, a safe, spacious and sustainable luxury six-seat SUV

    • NIO ET5, a mid-size smart electric sedan

    • NIO ET5 Touring, a smart electric tourer designed for lifestyle versatility

  • firefly, NIO’s new brand for high-end compact EVs – a small, intelligent electric vehicle tailored for urban users.

On the road right now: Two Firefly product managers have set off with a Firefly on June 9th from Berlin, Germany for the “euro charge tour”, and will travel through seven countries in 15 days for a 5,500-kilometer (3,417-mile) European road-test loop to validate charging and service networks ahead of its debut.

Firefly ”would select an appropriate time between June and August to launch its first model in Europe”, said to Qin Lihong, Nio's co-founder and president. Qin said that by the end of this year, Firefly would enter about 20 overseas markets.

In May, its first full month of deliveries, Firefly delivered 3,680 vehicles in its home market, according to data released by Nio earlier this month.
