EVwire brief: Tesla's Giga Berlin plant is opening a "Cell Giga Challenge" to outside startups, inviting them to pitch technology on materials, production, equipment, automation, or AI for its 4680 battery cell line, according to Giga Berlin plant manager André Thierig.
The strongest applicants get direct technical discussions with Tesla's cell-production engineers, a pitch day in front of Tesla stakeholders, and a shot at a paid pilot project with the 4680 team.
“We are getting ready for 18GWh of cell production and you can be part of it. If you are a start-up and think you can challenge us in a real production environment on, […] this is your unique opportunity. You can win a paid pilot project with our 4680 cell team at Giga Berlin.”
Here's André's post on X:
The Cell Giga Challenge runs in five phases:
Apply online: Applicants submit their idea, use case, and results to date.
Screening: Tesla reviews each application against real manufacturing requirements.
First technical discussion: If there's a good fit, Tesla discusses the technology and possible application scenarios.
Pitch Day. Selected applicants present their ideas to Tesla stakeholders.
Pilot talks. The strongest solutions get translated into concrete cooperation and pilot projects.
Applications close July 24, 2026, via JUNI's program page.

Giga Berlin produces the Model Y today, but Elon Musk has teased an expanded product lineup for the factory in the future
Context:
The 18 GWh figure tracks with Tesla's $250 million investment to more than double Giga Berlin's 4680 cell capacity from 8 GWh, a build-out EVwire covered that's expected to add over 1,500 jobs at the site. JUNI's own program page cites a combined $350 million invested "in the last six months," a larger figure than the $250 million investment Tesla announced directly.
Thierig has run Giga Berlin's production side since 2023, after joining Tesla in 2020 as senior manager of the paint shop and becoming director of manufacturing in 2021. He's also a frequent public face for the plant, recently promoting the factory's new employee sports facility as part of Giga Berlin's hiring push.
Handing outside engineers a look at your own production line takes some confidence, or a genuine bottleneck Tesla wants solved fast. Probably some of both.
