EVWire brief: Tesla has officially opened its first next-gen V4 Supercharger with V4 cabinets, capable of 500kW charging speeds for cars and up to 1.2MW for the Tesla Semi!

Location: 2545 El Camino Real, Redwood City, CA 94061

To clarify — we’ve seen V4 Superchargers around for a while, but since the high-voltage cabinet had been at the V3 or ~V3.5 level, they couldn’t support the 500kW charging. And other Teslas, except Cybertruck, can’t use this 500kW for the maximum power at all and remain at 250kW.

1.2 MW config for Semi. For cars it can be configured as either 1.2 MW or 1 MW efficiently shared across 8 V4 post.

Also, this new V4 cabinet is a huge unlock for Tesla in scalability of its infrastructure deployments: instead of 4 stalls per cabinet, it can now handle 8, and it has 3X the power density along with a lot more efficiency throughout, along with lower costs.

Here’s a look inside the cabinet, from Max de Zegher at Tesla Supercharging:

Max also wrote: “Lots of other benefits too (efficiency, density, throughput, deployment, servicing) that ultimately help the cost per kWh for our customers.

Additionally, we have V2 sites that have been operational for over a decade already. V4 cabinet Superchargers opening now, are the tech that will provide awesome charging for the next decade+”

Dan Priestley, the lead of Tesla Semi program, also shared the benefits for the Semi:

“V4 cabinet rocks and has large benefits for Semi
-Commonality with car uses increases volumes, decreases cost, improves service
-Higher power density reduces construction costs and footprint on yards
-More efficient energy conversion reduces operating cost
-Deployable worldwide”

Tesla also showed the first plug-in at the new site as well:
