Tesla regains global BEV sales lead in Q1 2026: TrendForce

EVwire brief: Tesla reclaimed the global battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales lead in Q1 2026, overtaking BYD as worldwide New Energy Vehicle (NEV) sales declined 2% year-over-year.

As per TrendForce data, Tesla led the global BEV market with a 12.9% share in Q1 2026, ahead of BYD at 10.9% and Geely at 5.5%. Xiaomi entered the global top-10 BEV rankings in seventh place with a 2.9% market share. Legacy automakers like Kia (3.1%), Toyota (2.6%), and Volkswagen (2.7%) saw their BEV efforts pay off as well.

Here’s Q1 2026’s global BEV rankings:

Global sales of battery electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids, and hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles totaled 3.94 million units during the quarter, representing 19% of overall global vehicle sales.

The research firm said weaker demand in China and heavy domestic competition pressured several automakers during the quarter, while Western Europe, Japan, and South Korea showed improving BEV momentum.

In countries like South Korea, vehicles like the Model Y helped boost the momentum of BEVs. Here’s our report on South Korea’s BEV trend:

Context:

TrendForce noted that several major Chinese automakers experienced weaker BEV sales growth during the quarter as domestic competition intensified and companies remained heavily concentrated on the Chinese market.

BYD, Geely, and SAIC-GM-Wuling all posted year-over-year BEV sales declines during the first quarter.

BYD focused its BEV sales in China during the first quarter, TrendForce noted

The report highlighted Leapmotor as one of the stronger-performing brands in Q1, citing rapid product expansion and aggressive pricing as drivers of growth. Kia and Toyota were also noted for improving their positions through broader multi-market strategies.

TrendForce still expects the global new energy vehicle market to grow 14% in 2026 to roughly 23.35 million units, though the firm warned that rising raw material and automotive memory costs are creating new pricing pressure across the industry.

A year late, but Szeged is now "the number one priority."
