EVwire brief: During the Q1 2026 earnings call, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the next-generation Roadster could debut “in a month or so.”
Musk noted the timing depends on completing testing and validation, with Tesla aiming to ensure the demo goes smoothly. He added that the Roadster is expected to be a high-impact unveil, even if it is not a major revenue driver for Tesla.
He also framed the Roadster’s role in Tesla’s future lineup, suggesting it may be the only manually driven vehicle as the company shifts toward fully autonomous cars.

The Roadster was initially expected to be available more than five years ago
Context:
The Roadster has seen multiple delays since its original announcement way back in late 2017, but Tesla’s latest comments suggest the focus is now on execution quality rather than speed.
While the broader lineup is moving toward autonomy, the Roadster stands apart as:
Tesla’s final true driver’s car
A technology and performance showcase
A brand halo product
Here’s Elon’s full quote about the new Roadster during the Q1 2026 earnings call (emphasis ours):
“Long-term the only manually driven car will be the new Tesla Roadster. Speaking of which, we may be able to debut that in a month or so. It requires a lot of testing and validation before we can actually have a demo and not, you know, have something go wrong with the demo.
“But I think it will be one of the most exciting product unveils ever. I'm not sure it moves the needle massively from a revenue standpoint, so, but it is very cool. I think it might be one of the most spectacular demos ever.”

The Roadster’s updated shape was teased by Tesla in a new trademark application.
A recent Tesla job listing for a Manufacturing Engineer, Roadster role in Fremont highlights ongoing work on production systems and battery architecture.
The role focuses on:
Developing battery manufacturing equipment
Supporting new product architectures
Taking systems from concept through production launch
The posting also describes the Roadster program as still being in early development stages. Elon Musk has stated in the past that the next-generation Roadster is a “dessert” of sorts after Tesla’s “main course,” which is FSD.
With FSD now in its refining stages, and with Unsupervised FSD running in an initial fleet of Robotaxis in Austin, Dallas, and Houston, it appears that the time for “dessert” is indeed at hand.
