Audi unveils the A2 e-tron, its most efficient electric car ever that starts at €38,200

EVwire brief: Audi has revealed the A2 e-tron, a compact electric hatchback that holds the title of most efficient car in the brand's history. With energy consumption as low as 12.8 kWh per 100 km and a drag coefficient of just 0.24, the A2 e-tron will be offered in four power levels with up to 646 km (401 miles) of WLTP range. Prices in Germany start at €38,200 (US$44,360). Orders open September 10, with first deliveries in December 2026.

The A2 e-tron is built at Audi's Ingolstadt plant alongside the A3, on the Volkswagen Group's MEB+ platform. Audi says it was developed 21 months earlier than comparable predecessors.

The A2 e-tron is Audi's play for Europe's most competitive EV segment: the compact class. It arrives with flush electric door handles, a full-width rear LED light bar, and up to four selectable digital daytime running light signatures, three static and one animated.

The A2 has four DRL options, for that added customization.

It sits on a 2.77-meter (109-inch) wheelbase and rolls on 18- to 20-inch alloy wheels.

❝

The A2 e-tron is more than a new model: It represents Audi's renewal. It shows how we are rethinking premium for Europe: using resources more intelligently without compromising on quality, technology, or customer experience.

Gernot Döllner, CEO of Audi

The design leans hard into aerodynamic efficiency, which is where that 0.24 Cd figure comes from. The S line exterior option adds pronounced bumpers, gloss-black side skirts, and a sportier diffuser.

A drag coefficient of 0.24 makes it the slipperiest compact Audi has ever built.

Audi A2 e-tron battery, range and charging

Audi offers the A2 e-tron in four power levels across three battery sizes. The two smaller packs use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry; the larger pack is nickel manganese cobalt (NMC). All variants use silicon carbide (SiC) power electronics, four levels of regenerative braking, and one-pedal driving. Bidirectional charging (vehicle-to-load and vehicle-to-home) is available in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.

The most efficient configuration is the 140 kW variant with the 61 kWh LFP battery and optional efficiency package, which achieves the headline 12.8 kWh per 100 km. That is the lowest energy consumption figure of any Audi ever produced.

The 170 kW variant with the 84 kWh NMC pack holds the WLTP range title at 646 km (401 miles), with a lowest consumption of 13.9 kWh per 100 km. The range-topping 240 kW variant produces 545 Nm (402 lb-ft) of torque.

The A2’s largest battery capacity comes in the 240 kW variant, which features an 84 kWh NMC battery.

Audi A2 e-tron safety and driver assistance

Standard safety equipment is comprehensive. Audi's optional adaptive cruise assist plus adds lane guidance at speeds up to 210 km/h (130 mph).

  • Standard: Emergency brake assist, swerve assist, attention assist, adaptive cruise control, parking system plus, reversing camera, side assist with exit warning, rear cross-traffic assist

  • Optional: Adaptive cruise assist plus with lane guidance (up to 210 km/h / 130 mph), surround-view 3D cameras, trained parking, proactive occupant protection

Context:

The A2 name is a revival. The original Audi A2, produced from 1999 to 2005, was a lightweight aluminum hatchback that was ahead of its time, commercially unsuccessful, and a cult classic. The nameplate has been shelved for two decades, so bringing it back as an efficiency-focused EV is a deliberate callback.

Outside the group, the Renault Megane E-Tech (from around €37,000 in Germany) and MG4 EV (from around €24,990) are its most direct segment-matched rivals in the compact electric hatchback class. The A2 e-tron's starting price of €38,200 is competitive for an Audi badge, though rivals like the MG4 significantly undercut it on price.
