EVwire brief: Ford is recalling 86,543 Mustang Mach-E electric SUVs in the United States because rear side quarter-window trim can detach from the vehicle and potentially strike another vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
The affected Mach-Es were built between Feb. 17, 2023, and Oct. 8, 2024. Ford traced the problem to a new assembly jig introduced by glass supplier Saint-Gobain Mexico that reduced the time available for the window trim primer to cure.
Ford discovered the issue in May after seeing an increase in warranty claims involving loose or detached trim on Mach-Es. The supplier had introduced the new jig in February 2023. In September 2024, it changed the process by adding a 30-second timer to ensure adequate curing time.
Ford is aware of 219 reports involving loose or detached trim on vehicles covered by the recall. Dealers will inspect the affected rear side quarter-window glass and replace the trim free of charge where necessary. Ford said it is not aware of any crashes or injuries associated with the defect. The recall is filed under NHTSA campaign number 26V487000.

The Mustang Mach-E is currently Ford's only passenger electric vehicle still on sale in the United States, making it an important part of the automaker's current U.S. EV lineup.
Context:
The recall is the latest quality issue to affect the Mustang Mach-E. Ford issued another recall last month covering nearly 43,000 Mach-Es because rear differentials on certain 2021, 2022 and 2023 rear-wheel-drive vehicles could experience pinion-shaft fractures caused by bending fatigue. That failure could potentially leave the vehicle stranded.
The latest problem is unrelated to the drivetrain. It simply came from the manufacturing process for the rear quarter-window trim. The supplier introduced the faster installation process in February 2023, and later added the timer in September 2024 to give the primer enough time to cure. The recall now covers vehicles produced during the affected period.
