EVWire brief: 45,535 EVs were sold in Germany in April 2025, which recorded growth of 53.5% Year-over-Year (YoY), and a 18.8% market share in the overall 242,728 cars sold.
Now, comparing with the year 2024 is a bit off since the incentives that were cut in Dec 2023 effectively killed off the market for most of the year, especially the first part. In fact, in all of 2024, per our global sales tracker, EV sales dropped by -27.4% compared to 2023, and reached just a 13.5% EV mix (down from 18.4% in 2023) overall. So we could see some normalization happening here, this time without the environmental subsidies in play.
Compared to the not-that-outlier year of 2023 where 29,740 EVs were sold in April, this year’s April numbers this year are still up 53%.
Looking at year-to-date (YTD) numbers Jan-Apr, Germany has seen 158,503 new EV registrations this year, which is 42.8% more than the same period’s 111,005 EV sales.
As far as EV models go, the VW ID.7 is leading the EV pack both in April (3,133) and year-to-date (12,469) numbers, followed by VW ID.3 (2,989 in April and 4th YTD) and VW ID.4 & ID.5 (2,629 sales in April and 2nd YTD).
Is Volkswagen just enjoying its spotlight while the competitor Model Y is gone due to retooling (10th total YTD, 639 sales in April) or is this more of a permanent thing? I have my doubts but we shall see.
