EVwire brief: BYD has launched the third-generation Atto 3 in China, sold locally as the Yuan Plus, and it's a significant step up. The updated compact SUV is physically larger than its predecessor, starts at 119,900 yuan ($17,686), adds the company's second-generation Blade Battery, Flash Charging capability, and moves to the newer e-Platform 3.0 Evo architecture.
Using BYD’s Flash Charging system, which features a maximum single-gun charging power of 1,500 kW, the new Atto 3 could charge its battery from 10% to 70% in about five minutes. BYD currently operates over 5,900 flash charging stations across 312 cities as of mid-May. Internationally, BYD has plans for 6,000 overseas flash chargers, with Europe first in line.
Two battery options are available: a 57.5-kWh pack with 540 km (336 miles) of CLTC range, or a 68.5-kWh pack good for 630 km (391 miles). Both use rear-wheel drive, with motor options of 200 kW or 240 kW. God's Eye B, BYD's LiDAR-equipped driver assistance system, is available as a 12,000 yuan ($1,770) add-on on all trims except the base.
Inside, the updated Atto 3 features a larger floating central touchscreen running BYD’s latest DiLink software, along with a new two-spoke steering wheel, head-up display, column-mounted gear selector, and 50W wireless phone charging.

Context:
The price bump, 4,100 yuan ($604) more than the outgoing base model, is notable. Price hikes are rare in China's brutally competitive compact EV segment, and BYD is betting the new Atto 3’s hardware upgrades more than justify it.
The Atto 3’s main competition is Geely's Galaxy E5, and BYD is responding with a longer wheelbase, the DiSus-C intelligent damping system, and flash charging that the Galaxy E5 doesn't offer.
The Atto 3 is one of BYD's most important global models, sold across Europe, Australia, Southeast Asia, and beyond. The update hasn't been formally announced for international markets yet, but given the model's global footprint, an announcement is likely coming.
