Prologis and PragmaCharge open Spain's largest electric truck charging hub in Valencia, 50 ports planned

EVwire brief: Spain's largest dedicated charging hub for electric heavy trucks is now open in Valencia, and it is just over a quarter built. Prologis and PragmaCharge launched operations at the 12,500-square-meter (about 134,500-square-foot) site at MercaValencia, near the Port of Valencia, on September 25 with 14 charging ports live on day one.

At full build-out, the hub will have 50 high-power charging ports on a secured 4 MW grid connection, which the companies say will make it one of Europe's largest dedicated electric heavy-truck charging hubs.

The remaining ports will come online in phases, with completion targeted for 2027. The site runs on 100% renewable electricity and includes dedicated heavy-truck parking and PragmaCharge's dynamic charging management software.

The first customers are Spanish haulers Logística Carosan-Transnugon and Grupo Torres. Their electric trucks run routes linking Valencia with Madrid, Castellón and Alicante, and Grupo Torres also uses the hub for container runs between the Port of Valencia and customer sites.

Prologis announced the opening on LinkedIn:

Are you a heavy-duty EV geek? We just launched eTruckwire, a whole news publication dedicated to electric trucks and heavy-duty charging.

Prologis developed and owns the facility, which was built around PragmaCharge's fleet and charging requirements. PragmaCharge runs the hub under its Electric Trucking-as-a-Service platform, a package of electric truck access, charging infrastructure, software and operational support for fleet customers. The hub will also take on wider heavy-truck charging demand around Valencia.

PragmaCharge CEO Henry Lawson said the site was planned around how fleets actually work day to day:

❝

Starting charging operations at MercaValencia is an important step for heavy-duty fleet electrification in Spain. Fleet operators need to know that electric trucks can work within real routes, charging windows and customer commitments. This hub is designed around that operating reality.

— Henry Lawson, CEO of PragmaCharge

The timeline could move faster than the official target. Remco Köhne, who worked on the project, wrote on LinkedIn that up to 50 truck charging points are expected within six months, and that the hub is set to become the largest in Europe early next year. He added that 130 guests attended the opening.

Context:

MercaValencia is a 500,000-square-meter (about 5.4 million-square-foot) agri-food logistics platform with 205 companies, more than 5,000 workers and over 500 truck movements every day. That puts the hub's chargers right next to existing regional and port-linked freight traffic.

Logística Carosan-Transnugon, through its On Route operation, is running its electric trucks in 24-hour fleet service, including mineral water runs between Chóvar and Silla as well as wider regional and long-distance freight. Managing Director Pablo Bordils said electric trucks have to prove themselves in everyday operations:

❝

For a transport company like ours, electrification only works when we can use electric heavy trucks in day-to-day freight operations with confidence. The MercaValencia hub gives us that confidence by providing charging certainty in the right location and connected to the routes we run.

— Pablo Bordils, Managing Director of Logística Carosan-Transnugon–On Route

The project also fits the Port Authority of Valencia's Net Zero Emissions Plan, which aims for carbon neutrality across its facilities in València, Sagunt and Gandia by 2035, according to Port Authority President Mar Chao.
