Tesla hits 55% US EV market share in July, Model Y alone outsells every rival brand

EVwire brief: Tesla continued to dominate the U.S. electric vehicle market in July, accounting for roughly 55% of all new EV sales. The company sold an estimated 42,435 vehicles, up 4.9% from June.

The entire U.S. EV market reached 77,266 sales, meaning Tesla alone sold more EVs than every other automaker combined.

Cox Automotive, which tracks the U.S. EV market, reported in its July 2026 EV Market Monitor that the Model Y was responsible for roughly 37% of all new EV sales, generating more volume than the entire EV lineup of any other automaker.

Hyundai had the biggest jump among high-volume brands, with sales rising 36% from June. Kia also had a strong month, helped by continued demand for the EV9, while Rivian, Toyota and Cadillac remained among the other leading EV sellers.

The Tesla Model Y is still the king of the United States’ EV segment.

Toyota and Hyundai are becoming particularly interesting competitors. In Q2 2026, Hyundai sold 14,274 EVs, while Toyota moved 11,826. Toyota's Q2 EV volume was up a huge 225% year over year, while Hyundai was down 8.5%.

Still, the scale of Tesla's lead is hard to miss. July's 77,266 new EV sales were down 41.5% year over year, yet Tesla alone accounted for more than half the market. Tesla also remained the leading used-EV brand, with just 38 days of supply, the lowest among the major brands tracked by Cox.

The Tesla Model 3 remains the United States’ second best-selling electric car.

Context:

Tesla's dominance has been remarkably consistent this year. Cox's Q2 data showed the company selling 124,800 EVs, giving it a 50.5% share of the quarter. Its first-half total reached 242,100 vehicles, or 52.3% of the market. That’s an improvement over Q1 2025, when Tesla’s segment share dropped to 43.2%.

But there are signs that the field behind Tesla is changing. Toyota's 21,855 first-half EV sales were up 136.3% from a year earlier, while Hyundai delivered 26,936, down 5.4%. Subaru was another standout, with first-half EV sales up 54.8%.

So while Tesla still owns the U.S. EV market by a ridiculous margin, Toyota's growth is also worth watching closely. It has gone from being a relatively minor EV player to one of the country's five biggest EV sellers in a matter of months.
