EVwire brief: Tesla has offered a first look at the Optimus pilot production line at the Fremont Factory, the very space that produced the Model S and Model X for over a decade.
The footage, shared during the Model S/X Signature farewell event, shows a sprawling, highly organized assembly environment: multiple parallel workstations, overhead industrial cranes, and enclosed assembly cells.
On-screen graphics highlight Tesla's targets: a 1 million robot per year run-rate and 12,000 human jobs to be created.

Context:
Converting the Fremont Factory’s legacy Model S/X space rather than building an entirely new facility is a deliberate move. Tesla is leveraging existing automotive infrastructure to accelerate Optimus’ production.
Musk confirmed on Tesla's Q1 2026 earnings call that production is expected to begin in late July or August, though he cautioned that output will be quite slow initially.
Tesla’s long-term ambitions for Optimus are anything but slow. Fremont handles the 1 million unit pilot line, while Gigafactory Texas is slated for a dedicated Optimus plant capable of producing 10 million robots per year.

Elon Musk has big ambitions for Optimus, and its hands are what make them possible
Optimus Gen 3: it's all about the hands
Tesla will be mass-producing Optimus Gen 3, and its biggest innovation is arguably its hands. Optimus Gen 3’s hands feature 22 degrees of freedom, which is already close to a human's. Elon Musk has stated that Optimus will look more like a person in a suit than a robot.
Optimus’ dexterity isn't just for show. Musk wants Optimus to be capable of performing the most complicated tasks that humans are able to do, such as manufacturing or even surgery. This, he said, could pave the way for a world of “amazing abundance.”
Musk has also noted that Optimus would likely be sent in SpaceX’s early Mars missions, likely as a way to establish infrastructure on the red planet before humans arrive. The robots’ hands are what make all that possible.
