Tesla confirms HW3 can’t reach Unsupervised FSD, but V14 park-to-park still coming in June

It is an unfortunate update, but one that seemed inevitable for a while now.

Tesla confirms HW3 can’t reach Unsupervised FSD, but V14 park-to-park still coming in June

EVwire brief: Elon Musk confirmed that Tesla Hardware 3 (HW3) vehicles cannot achieve Unsupervised FSD. At the same time, Tesla confirmed that it will roll out a V14 “lite” build for HW3 in June, bringing park-to-park FSD (Supervised) with features similar to what Hardware 4 systems have today.

As per Elon Musk during the Q1 2026 earnings call:

  • HW3 has ~1/8 the memory bandwidth of AI4

  • Unsupervised FSD requires significantly higher compute and bandwidth

  • With this in mind, Tesla will offer:

    • Discounted trade-ins for HW3 owners

    • Hardware upgrades (AI4) requiring computer + camera replacement

❝

“We're going to also release a V14 version for Hardware 3. This will be a distilled version of the same V14 software that we released for Hardware 4. And people should be able to start the drives from Park state and basically have all the features that V14 for Hardware 4 has, and that's expected to come end of June.”

—VP for AI Software Ashok Elluswamy

Context:

Tesla originally targeted HW3 as capable of full autonomy, but the gap between HW3 and newer AI4 hardware has widened as the company shifted toward transformer-based AI models, where memory bandwidth becomes a limiting factor.

Musk noted that upgrading HW3 vehicles at scale will require dedicated “micro-factories” in major metro areas, rather than relying on traditional service centers.

❝

“For customers that have bought FSD, what we're offering is essentially a trade-in, like a discounted trade-in for cars that have AI4 hardware. And we'll also be offering the ability to upgrade the car to replace the computer, and you also need to replace the cameras unfortunately, to go to Hardware 4.

“To do this efficiently, we're going to have to set up like kind of micro-factories or small factories in major metropolitan areas in order to do it efficiently. Because if it's done just at the service center, it is extremely slow and inefficient.”

—CEO Elon Musk

The long-term goal is to migrate vehicles to AI4, which is required for:

  • Robotaxi eligibility

  • Unsupervised FSD deployment

What this means for HW3 owners

While HW3 will not reach full autonomy, Tesla is positioning a two-track solution for owners who purchased FSD with their HW3 vehicles:

  • Short term (June):

    • V14 brings park-to-park FSD (Supervised)

    • This should bring expanded capabilities similar to current AI4 vehicles

  • Long term:

    • Owners get an upgrade path to AI4 hardware through discounted trade-ins to AI4 vehicles

    • This should open access to Unsupervised FSD and Robotaxi network
