EVwire brief: Tesla has officially launched in Uruguay, its third direct-sales market in South America after Chile and Colombia.
After teasing its arrival earlier this month, Tesla has now launched its official Uruguayan website, opening orders for the Model 3 and Model Y. Elon Musk also highlighted the launch on X with a brief post saying, "Tesla now in Uruguay."
Customers in Uruguay can now order three variants of the Model 3 and two versions of the Model Y through Tesla's online configurator. The Model 3 starts at US$32,990, while the Model Y starts at US$36,490.
The announcement comes just weeks after Tesla hinted that its Uruguayan launch was imminent. With the configurator now live, customers in the country can officially place orders for Tesla's two best-selling vehicles.

Context:
The pieces for this launch had been falling into place for weeks. EVwire reported last month that Tesla named Joaquín Lizarralde as country manager for both Argentina and Uruguay, treating the two as one operational zone, while Uruguayan regulators had already signed off on three versions each of the Model 3 and Model Y for local sale.
Until today, every Tesla on Uruguayan roads got there through the gray market. Local importers like AutoImport have been bringing in Model 3 and Model Y units through Chinese partners. Government data puts the total at close to 80 vehicles between 2020 and mid-2024, all without factory warranty or official service backing them.

Uruguay punches above its weight in electric vehicles. Its renewable-heavy grid, tax incentives, and battery-electric share are the highest in Latin America.
Tesla is also arriving into a market where Chinese automakers, not Western ones, currently set the pace. BYD leads EV sales in Uruguay, which has used its renewable-heavy grid and EV tax incentives to push battery-electric share above 20% of new car sales in recent quarters, among the highest rates anywhere in Latin America.
