EVwire brief: Tesla Model Y has officially crossed 100,000 registrations in Norway, according to data from the country's Opplysningsrådet for veitrafikken (OFV). The milestone was reached on May 20, 2026, less than five years after the first units arrived in August 2021.
"That a single car model passes 100,000 new registrations in such a short time is remarkable. The Tesla Model Y has hit the Norwegian market very well, and the figures show how quickly the electric car market has developed in Norway."
Today, 1 in 29 passenger cars on Norwegian roads is a Tesla Model Y. Norway's EV market is one of the most mature in the world, but even by its standards, this is no small feat.
Tesla Europe announced the milestone on X:
Context:
Nearly 88% of those Model Y registrations are private owners, not businesses. The Model Y has spread well beyond Oslo, though the capital still leads with 16,800+ units, followed by Bergen (7,450), Bærum (4,313), and Trondheim (4,240).
The typical registered Model Y owner is a man in his early 40s, though officials note the car is usually shared within households.
Tesla registered 27,600+ new Model Ys in Norway in 2025 alone, its strongest year yet, with another 7,000+ already on the books in 2026. The majority were produced at Giga Berlin, with Giga Shanghai contributing some of the remainder, per industry tracker Roland Pircher.
Norwegians, it turns out, are minimalists about their cars too. White accounts for over 35% of all registrations, followed by black and gray. (Of course, white is the Model Y’s free color, so that explains a good portion of their number.)
From niche EV to Norway's "people's car"
Norway is the world's most advanced EV market, and no single vehicle has defined that transition more than the Model Y. It arrived at exactly the right moment. It also offered long range, all-wheel drive, and practical family utility, just as Norwegian buyers were ready for it.

The base RWD variant lowered the entry point to the Model Y (and it’s default color is white too)
OFV's Stokke summed it up:
"This milestone doesn't just say something about the Tesla Model Y. It also says something about Norway as an electric car market. Few countries have had such a rapid transition to electric passenger cars, and the Model Y has been one of the models that has really contributed to making the electric car a common choice for Norwegian car buyers.”
Few countries have embraced EVs this fast. Fewer still have given one model this kind of mandate.
