Explorer drives Tesla Model Y 20,000 km through the Sahara, plans global EV expedition next

EVwire brief: Minik Dam Frank, Founder and Adventure Director of Next Adventure, recently shared that he has spent 200 days living in a Tesla Model Y and driving 20,000 km across the Sahara.

The expedition, featured on Denmark’s Go’ Morgen Danmark, is now evolving into a planned global around-the-world journey using solar-supported charging for off-grid mobility.

Frank shared his experience on LinkedIn, where it received support from Tesla Nordic Regional Lead Kim Gaba Jensen:

Context:

Despite the prevalence of electric cars, extended journeys across remote areas still present serious challenges.

It was then no surprise that Frank described his Sahara journey as a turning point in how he views electric vehicles:

❝

“I no longer see electric vehicles as limited by infrastructure… but as a new way to access places that were never truly accessible before.”

—Minik Dam Frank

By living entirely out of his Tesla Model Y in one of the harshest environments on Earth, the expedition tested not just range, but practicality, resilience, and energy management in real-world conditions.

In a post on its official Facebook page, Go’ Morgen Danmark noted that over his journey, Frank ended up charging his Model Y using everything from “mobile master with solar cells to sockets in cafes.”

What’s next

The next phase of the project aims to push those limits further. Frank is preparing a global expedition, where he plans to drive around the world in an EV while living in the vehicle full-time.

“I want to show that the electric car doesn't impose limitations, but gives new possibilities.”

The key difference for this next venture is the addition of a solar-based charging system, which is designed to enable self-sufficient travel in areas without charging infrastructure.

As per Frank: “This is not just about adventure — it’s about proving what truly independent electric mobility looks like in the real world.”
