Full Timeline: How Tesla's war with Sweden's unions played out over nearly three years

EVwire brief: Tesla's labor dispute with Swedish union IF Metall is over. It lasted nearly three years, involved more than a dozen unions, reached Sweden's Supreme Court, and ended without a single collective agreement signed.

What started in October 2023 as a walkout by 130 mechanics at seven Tesla workshops became Sweden's longest active strike in modern history. Dockworkers blocked 55+ ports. Postal workers froze license plate deliveries. Electricians left over 100 Supercharger stalls sitting dark. Nordic unions in Denmark, Norway, and Finland joined. Tesla found a workaround for nearly all of it.

LO contract secretary Veli-Pekka Säikkälä called the outcome "a failure." But he added: "We have lost a battle, not the war."

Details:

We built an interactive timeline of every major event in the dispute. Click on each card to see some context behind each event.

"Tesla has adjusted details — they want to be a good employer. It's about wages and conditions."

Nilsson also says IF Metall is prepared to take "greater risks" after the Mediation Institute stepped back, calling the conflict impossible to walk away from.

Tesla registers just 7,252 vehicles in Sweden for all of 2025, down 66.8% from 21,894 in 2024. The worst annual result in years, driven by strike disruption, anti-Tesla sentiment, and the Model Y Juniper refresh, which resulted in no Model Y deliveries for several months.

Sympathy

Seko announces a blockade on maintenance, service, and repairs at Tesla charging stations — including those operated by third-party partners. The action targets Tesla's strategy of expanding the Supercharger network through external hosts like shopping centers. Contract secretary Ulrika Nilsson: "It's about stopping Tesla from installing more charging poles before they have signed a collective agreement." She also acknowledged Tesla's track record of workarounds: "Tesla is Tesla. They keep trying."

LO Stockholm gives Nacka leader "The Kick" over Tesla FSD approval
Collateral
Union awards a boot to a politician for letting Tesla test self-driving cars.
LO Stockholm awards its annual "Kängan" (The Kick) — a literal boot — to Nacka municipal board chairman Mats Gerdau for approving Tesla FSD testing on public roads without a collective agreement. Gerdau pushes back hard: "Allowing self-driving cars is great. There are about 17,000 companies in Nacka. Some don't have collective agreements — does that mean they're bad companies?" He calls tying permits to labor disputes "almost an abuse of power."
Apr 30, 2026
Strikers become zero-taxpayers after IF Metall tax error
Collateral
IF Metall's tax mistake strips health benefits from its own strikers.
IF Metall's failure to properly report strike compensation to the Swedish Tax Agency results in striking workers being classified as zero-taxpayers. They lose access to health benefits, sickness pay, parental leave, and loan eligibility. The Swedish Tax Agency says a legislative change is needed to fix the problem. IF Metall acknowledges the error, saying "it can't be blamed on anyone else."
May 4, 2026
IF Metall chair acknowledges "a limit" to the strike
Strike
Marie Nilsson says the quiet part out loud. About 70 members still on strike.
IF Metall chair Marie Nilsson tells Swedish media that "of course there is a limit" to how long the strike can continue. About 70 members remain on strike, down from the original 130. The admission marks a shift in IF Metall's public messaging after two and a half years of insisting the strike would go on indefinitely.
May 11, 2026
Stockholm strikers drop from 21 to nine
Strike
Half gone in two weeks. Tax gaffe and picket rules drive the exodus.
The number of active Tesla strikers in Stockholm falls from 21 at the start of the year to just nine, according to Dagens Arbete. Most departures are tied to the zero-taxpayer controversy and the new 40-hour weekly picket requirement. Current striker "Ronja": "It's a disaster. In our group, half has disappeared in just two weeks." Former striker "Anders" says the picket rule "felt more like a punishment" and suspects IF Metall is pushing strikers to give up so the union can't be blamed for ending the action.

May 28, 2026
PostNord mail case heads to Supreme Court
Legal
Can a strike legally block postal services? Sweden's top court will decide.
The Swedish Supreme Court agrees to hear Tesla's case against PostNord over the license plate mail blockade. Tesla lost at both district and appeals court, racking up 8.5 million SEK (~$910,000) in legal costs. The Supreme Court will decide the core constitutional question: can sympathy strike actions legally block postal services? A hearing is expected in February or March 2027.
May 29, 2026
IF Metall rolls out a "yo-yo" tactic
Resolution
Mechanics return on union orders, Tesla sends them home on full pay.
IF Metall calls off strike action at Tesla workshops in Malmö and Uppsala after over two and a half years. The idea is to have strikers return to work then pulled out again, causing disruption. When the returning mechanics report for work, Tesla sends them home on full pay. Tesla notes that the strikers have been off work for so long, they need to be retrained before they are allowed back to work.
Jun 2026
June 2026: registrations rise 56% YoY
Recovery holds. Sweden mirrors Tesla's broader European rebound.
950 +56%
Tesla registrations continue recovering, up 56% year-over-year in Sweden. The recovery pattern mirrors broader European trends.
Aug 12, 2026
Four strikers remain. Former members turn on IF Metall.
Strike
The union is running out of strikers. And patience.
Swedish media reports just four Tesla mechanics remain on strike in Stockholm and Uppsala (two in Stockholm, two in Uppsala). Several others accepted buyouts and left. Former strikers accuse IF Metall of abandoning them. One tells Dagens Arbete the union is "walking away scot-free." Another tells Skånes Folkblad: "You can't stand there and say we're going to continue for 500 years and then not be able to back it up."
Aug 13, 2026
Strike ends. IF Metall calls it "a failure."
Resolution
Tesla bought out all strikers. No collective agreement signed. Ever.
IF Metall announces it is ending all industrial action against Tesla, effective immediately. Tesla bought out all remaining strikers. LO contract secretary Veli-Pekka Säikkälä: "It is clear that it is a failure. But we have lost a battle, not the war." Tesla never signed a collective agreement.

Context:

The strike's impact on Tesla's Swedish sales was dramatic but temporary. In July 2025, Tesla registered just 163 vehicles in Sweden, down 85.8% year-over-year. That was rock bottom. The broader "Tesla shame" sentiment, fueled by the strike and political backlash, pushed full-year 2025 registrations down to 7,252 vehicles. That was a 66.8% drop from 2024's 21,894, though a good part of this was due to the Model Y’s Juniper refresh

The recovery was equally sharp. By March 2026, Tesla registrations had surged 144% year-over-year, and the Model Y reclaimed its spot as Sweden's best-selling EV. Brand expert Jonas Colliander at the Stockholm School of Economics said the negative noise tends to be temporary: "The product is still the dominant one in the segment."
