GM cuts Chevy Bolt production run by about 75%, reveals UAW official

EVwire brief: GM's Kansas City-area factory is now expected to build only around 35,000 Chevrolet Bolts before the model wraps up in early 2027, roughly a quarter of the 150,000 originally planned.

The figures come from Dontay Wilson, who leads the UAW local at the plant, in comments to Reuters. He stated that the union worked out the number from the factory's daily output rather than from GM data.

General Motors, for its part, wouldn't discuss Bolt volumes, giving only a brief statement:

❝

“We continuously evaluate market dynamics and customer demand.”

The smaller run has knock-on effects inside the factory. Plans to bring back a second shift have been pushed back, according to a GM memo to employees, and Wilson put the number of workers on indefinite layoff at close to 1,000.

The site does have new work lined up. GM intends to start building the gas Chevrolet Equinox there next year, moving it from Mexico, and to relocate Buick Envision production from China. These vehicles, however, are not battery electric vehicles like the outgoing Bolt.

Context:

The Bolt nameplate first ran from 2016 to 2023, and GM revived it early this year with a $27,600 starting price, pitching it as a budget-friendly option in a pricey EV market. Sales have been modest so far, with 4,224 units sold through August. GM has called it a limited-run model but hasn't given an end date.

GM’s cutback mirrors a wider retreat across the US auto industry after the federal $7,500 EV tax credit ended in September 2025 and EV sales dropped. GM still builds around a dozen EVs, but it has converted some factories to gas models, and its write-downs tied to the EV pullback have reached $10.9 billion since spring 2025.
