Sweden's EV share hits record 44% in June, 2026 forecast jumps to 45%

EVwire brief: Electric cars set a fresh record in Sweden in June, taking almost 44% of new registrations, as per data from Mobility Sweden. The share sits at 41.5% for the year so far.

That run has pushed Mobility Sweden to lift its 2026 forecast for the EV share from 40% to 45%. This means nearly every second new car sold in Sweden could soon be fully electric.

❝

"Politics now have the opportunity to support the development and create long-term conditions for the transition to electric power. Broadening the electric car premium to more people who currently cannot afford to choose an electric car, while maintaining the reduced benefit value for company cars, is absolutely crucial."

—Sofia Linder, chief economist at Mobility Sweden (translated from Swedish)

The Tesla Model Y was Sweden’s best-selling EV in June

The Tesla Model Y was Sweden's best-selling EV in June, while the plug-in hybrid Volvo XC60 was the top-selling car overall, both for the month and across the first half. Tesla's own Swedish registrations jumped 56% in June as its European recovery gathered pace, and the Volvo EX40 sits close behind on the EV side for the year.

Volvo Cars was Sweden's biggest brand in the first half despite a 5% dip, ahead of Volkswagen, down 16%, and Toyota, up 9%.

Context:

Sweden's overall new-car market has stalled, and without EVs it would be shrinking outright. The first-half surge came largely from a spike in fuel prices and worries about rationing, though petrol and diesel are now being cut by about three kronor (roughly $0.30) per liter, which could take some pressure off.
