Timeline: How Tesla reached 10 million vehicles produced with just four factories

EVwire brief: Tesla has officially produced its 10 millionth vehicle, a black Model Y that rolled off the Fremont Factory production line this week.

Tesla marked the milestone on X, noting that it has only been six years since the company produced its one millionth vehicle. With the ramp of Gigafactories in Shanghai, Berlin and Texas, Tesla dramatically accelerated its vehicle production.

Here's how Tesla climbed from its first million to its tenth, based on the company's own milestone posts and our running production timeline.

Tesla's ten cumulative production milestones, 1 million to 10 million.

Here’s how these production milestones look in a graph. Will the Cybercab with its Unboxed manufacturing process make this the start of an S-curve? Time will tell.

To commemorate the 10 million vehicle production milestone, Tesla team members across the United States, Germany, and Shanghai shared their thanks and appreciation for the company’s customers.

Context:

The number that stands out isn't ten million, it's four. Tesla has reached the milestone with just four car factories: Fremont in California, Giga Shanghai, Giga Berlin, and Giga Texas.

That's a lean footprint next to its biggest rival. BYD builds cars at roughly nine major plants in China alone, and has been adding overseas factories in Thailand, Brazil, Hungary, Turkey, and Indonesia, pushing its total well into the teens. BYD turns out more vehicles overall, many of them plug-in hybrids, but Tesla's output per plant is very hard to match.

Here are photos from some of Tesla’s past production milestones:

Tesla’s 7 millionth vehicle was also produced at Fremont.

Vehicle No. 8 million was born in Giga Berlin.
