Tesla is preparing a public Cybercab launch in Austin as soon as this month, The Information reports

EVwire brief: Tesla is reportedly preparing to publicly launch the Cybercab in Austin, Texas, as soon as the end of this month. It would be the first commercial deployment of the company's purpose-built robotaxi.

The two-seat vehicle, Tesla's first built without a steering wheel or brake pedal, has been testing on public roads for months. Employees have been taking rides on private roads around the Austin campus since July.

The rollout plan: employee rides on public roads first, then integration into the existing Austin Robotaxi service a few days later, according to The Information. It should be noted that the end-of-August target is reportedly the current internal timeline, so it could shift as Tesla works through final preparations.

Tesla took similar steps before launching its first Robotaxi hub in Austin last year, including test drives, employee rides on private roads, and training with local first responders. The company has followed the same playbook this time around.

During the Q2 2025 earnings call, Elon Musk noted that because the Cybercab was built on an entirely new platform, Tesla had to “accumulate driving data that is specific to the Cybercab before we can put a lot of them on the road."

“One of the things for Cybercab that should be noted is because it is a new vehicle chassis, we need to accumulate driving data that is specific to the Cybercab before we can put a lot of them on the road… You'll see as we are confident about that, the number of Cybercabs in cities will increase dramatically”

Context:

The Cybercab received its EPA Certificate of Conformity in May 2026, confirming its production specs: a single 219-hp front motor, an estimated 48 kWh battery, and a 418-mile range. It is designed exclusively for Tesla's autonomous ride-hailing service.

August is shaping up as a big month for Tesla launches. The company is also reportedly planning to unveil the new Roadster this month, including a SpaceX cold-gas thruster demonstration, nine years after the original 2017 reveal. It remains to be seen if these two alleged August events, which were both initially reported by The Information, are the same.
