Allianz Partners and Waymo partner on insurance and safety research for European robotaxis

EVwire brief: Allianz Partners and Waymo are building an integrated insurance, claims, and safety-research ecosystem for Waymo's autonomous ride-hailing service in Europe, with the rollout starting in Germany.

The collaboration combines Waymo’s autonomous driving system with Allianz’s insurance, mobility assistance, claims management, and vehicle safety capabilities. The companies will work across four areas:

  • Insurance and risk: Coverage and risk-management solutions for Waymo’s autonomous fleets, including motor fleet insurance, general and product liability programs, and new insurance models for autonomous mobility platforms.

  • Claims: Digital claims handling through Solvd Group, Allianz Partners’ digital claims management entity.

  • Safety research: Joint research into autonomous vehicle safety, claims trends, and risk modeling, with the Allianz Center for Technology contributing crash analysis and vehicle safety expertise.

  • Vehicle recovery: Exploration of operational solutions for recovering autonomous vehicles.

Waymo plans a phased commercial rollout beginning in Germany, with the two companies aiming to extend the model to additional European markets over time.

Allianz Partners announced the collaboration on LinkedIn:

Allianz Partners CEO Tomas Kunzmann said the partnership combines capabilities that will be needed as autonomous mobility expands into new markets.

❝

Waymo's technology leadership, combined with Allianz's global expertise in insurance, assistance, and vehicle safety, allows us to build a comprehensive ecosystem that provides passengers peace of mind at every stage of the journey.

— Tomas Kunzmann, CEO at Allianz Partners

Waymo Head of Risk & Insurance Tilia Gode similarly described the insurance and operational infrastructure as part of the company's European rollout.

❝

Teaming up with Allianz Partners allows us to pair our proven U.S. safety record and commercial experience with world-class European risk and claims expertise, ensuring we scale reliably and responsibly from day one.

— Tilia Gode, Head of Risk & Insurance at Waymo

Context:

Waymo has been laying groundwork for a German launch for months. The company registered Waymo Germany GmbH in Munich back in June, a local entity that signaled intent without committing to a date. By August, Waymo had gone further and picked Munich specifically as its next ride-hailing market, with public rides targeted for late 2027.

Today's Allianz deal fills in a piece of that timeline that gets a lot less attention than the vehicles themselves. Before a robotaxi fleet can carry paying passengers commercially, someone has to underwrite it, build a claims process that works when there's no human driver to exchange information with, and start collecting the crash and safety data regulators and insurers will eventually want to see. Allianz's four priority areas amount to exactly that checklist.
