Tesla Robotaxi caused no crashes or accidents in a month, per new NHTSA data

EVwire brief: Tesla's Robotaxi fleet went an entire month without causing a single crash, according to the latest NHTSA Standing General Order data filed in July 2026.

The filing covers mid-June to mid-July and lists two incidents involving Tesla's unsupervised Model Y vehicles in Texas. In both cases, the Tesla was stationary and a human driver in another vehicle caused the collision. No passengers were aboard either robotaxi, and no injuries were reported.

What the NHTSA data shows

Under the Standing General Order (SGO 2021-01), companies operating autonomous driving systems must report all crashes to NHTSA. Tesla filed two monthly reports for June 2026:

  • Incident 1, Austin: The robotaxi was stopped at a red light in a left-turn-only lane. An SUV behind it attempted to change lanes and collided with a passenger car in the adjacent lane before hitting the right side of the Tesla. The Tesla was stationary with zero passengers.

  • Incident 2, Dallas: The robotaxi was parked on the right side of an alleyway. A nearby parked vehicle reversed and collided with the right side of the Tesla. Zero passengers.

In both cases, the Tesla's autonomous driving system was verified as engaged and the vehicle was not moving. The other driver caused each collision.

How other operators compared in June

For context, here's what other ADS operators reported to NHTSA for the same June 2026 period:

  • Waymo filed 46 monthly incident reports covering crashes across San Francisco, Los Angeles, the Phoenix metro area, Austin, Atlanta, Miami, and Denver, plus 22 additional five-day reports (required for more serious crashes) submitted in July. Waymo’s fleet is massive, with the company operating nearly 3,900 vehicles across multiple U.S. cities and logs over 500,000 paid rides per week.

  • Avride filed 8 monthly reports for June, with 7 in Dallas and 1 in Austin.

  • Zoox filed 2 five-day reports

  • Aurora and Gatik each filed 1.

Fleet size and operating areas

Tesla's unsupervised Robotaxi fleet has been growing but remains a fraction of Waymo's. The Robotaxi Tracker, which independently monitors AV fleets using community data, Texas DMV registrations, and government records, currently lists 143 community-tracked Tesla vehicles in Austin, 22 in Dallas, 25 in Houston, 3 in Tampa, 2 in Orlando, and 1 in Miami. Tesla also operates roughly 657 supervised Model Ys in the Bay Area with safety drivers aboard. The Texas DMV has 181 Tesla AVs registered under the state's autonomous vehicle permit.

For comparison, Robotaxi Tracker lists 3,871 Waymo vehicles and 36 Zoox vehicles. Tesla's zero-at-fault record over the June reporting period is notable given the scrutiny on autonomous vehicle safety, but it's operating across a much smaller footprint.

Tesla launched its Robotaxi service in Miami in early July.

Context:

This clean sheet follows a rougher stretch. Between July 2025 and March 2026, Tesla's Robotaxi fleet in Austin logged 17 incidents over nine months, at an average speed of 5.9 mph. A good number of those involved human drivers being at fault: rear-endings while the Tesla was stopped, a city bus clipping a mirror, a motor scooter hitting a parked vehicle.

The pattern from the earlier data carries through to June: when Tesla Robotaxis do show up in NHTSA filings, it's typically because another driver hit them, not because the autonomous system made a mistake. Two of the three remote-operator crashes Tesla has disclosed also happened at extremely low speeds (under 10 mph) during manual repositioning, not while the ADS was driving.
