Tesla shares first video of Cybercab's unboxed manufacturing process

EVwire brief: Tesla has released the first extended footage of its unboxed manufacturing process for the Cybercab, showing vehicle modules being assembled in parallel as the Robotaxi moved through its assembly line.

The company says the approach cuts factory line size in half and unlocks "much greater production capacity." Tesla calls it "the first real revolution in automotive manufacturing in over a century."

Until now, we had only seen teaser images and slides of what unboxed manufacturing would look like. As per Tesla's official Robotaxi account on X:

A version of this footage was shown behind the Cybercab team at the Cybercab's launch event last week, but this is the first time Tesla has shared it publicly. It is exactly what Tesla described back in March 2023, now actually happening at Giga Texas.

Elon Musk reposted the video, adding: "We redesigned Cybercab production for production over 5 times faster than conventional automotive manufacturing!"

Context:

Tesla first unveiled the unboxed manufacturing concept at its Investor Day in March 2023. Instead of building a car sequentially from front to back on one long line, Tesla splits the vehicle into separate modules and assembles them all at the same time in parallel sub-lines. Only at the very end do the finished modules come together and get framed into a complete car.

The Cybercab is the first Tesla that’s purpose-built for unboxed from the start, with injection-molded body panels that eliminate the need for a traditional paint shop. It also introduces several firsts for Tesla: a fully brake-by-wire system with individual actuators at each corner (no brake fluid, no master cylinder), a motor that uses zero rare earth metals, steer-by-wire and a 48-volt low-voltage architecture.
