EVwire brief: Tesla has received regulatory approval to deploy FSD Supervised in Estonia, making it the third European country to approve the system after the Netherlands and Lithuania.
Tesla Europe confirmed the news on Thursday, with customer rollout coming soon via an OTA update.
Estonia's Transport Administration approved the system by recognizing the Dutch type approval already issued by the Netherlands' RDW, the same route Lithuania took. No independent review was required. For context, Lithuania approved FSD Supervised just nine days ago, on May 20th.
What’s also interesting is that Tesla just launched in Estonia last month. Despite Tesla’s relatively late entry to Estonia, however, the Model 3 and Model Y were already the country’s most popular electric vehicles. Here’s our coverage of that story:
Context:
The RDW approval itself wasn't easy to get. Tesla's FSD system underwent around 18 months of testing on European roads before receiving clearance in the Netherlands, with driving data collected across the continent. Estonia has permitted self-driving and remotely operated vehicle testing since 2017, and officials described approving Tesla's system as a logical next step.
When Tesla Europe announced FSD Supervised’s rollout in Lithuania, the company noted that European drivers have already logged over 15 million km (9.3 million miles) with the system active. Less than three days later, drivers in the Netherlands and Lithuania passed 20 million km (12.42 million miles) with FSD Supervised.
We covered that story here:
As per the Transpordiamet, FSD Supervised is still classified as an SAE Level 2 driver assistance system. It can handle city streets, roundabouts, lane changes, and traffic controls, but drivers remain legally responsible at all times and must be ready to intervene as needed.
